'Expelled' stirring controversy as opening nears

(Los Angeles, Calif.) – Even before its April 18 release nationwide, Ben Stein's movie, EXPELLED: No Intelligence Allowed has triggered heated reactions from both sides of the debate between religion and science.

Atheists are "crashing" EXPELLED screenings and conference calls; critics are slamming it; and leaders are raving about it, film promoters say. One organization is urging theaters to reject the film, while another is holding a movie marathon for all 15 EXPELLED showings at their theater.

And EXPELLED screenings for legislators in Florida and Missouri are causing political firestorms and driving "Academic Freedom" bills that challenge Darwinism.

This month, take a walk in the woods with your kids

(Good News Daily) - The Children and Nature Network is helping to celebrate April as "Children & Nature Awareness Month."

A growing network of individuals, organizations and agencies are helping to spread the word about the importance of providing opportunities for all children to experience frequent, regular play and exploration in natural outdoor settings.

Children today are far less likely than past generations to spend time playing outside, and a growing body of research says children are paying a high price for that lack. Childhood obesity, inattentiveness, diminished creativity and depression are just a few of the problems linked to what author Richard Louv has dubbed "nature deficit disorder" in his best-selling book "Last Child in the Woods."

Bush seeks to offer food assistance

WASHINGTON (UPI) - The Bush administration is looking for ways the United States can help meet the food need of some countries, a White House spokesman said Monday.

President George W. Bush has asked his national security advisers, the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development to see what the United States can do to help ease the food crisis in the near term, spokeswoman Dana Perino said during a media briefing.

"And then over the long run, the source problems will need to be identified, the source of where the food is, so that there's a long-term plan in place that helps take care of the world's poor and hungry," Perino said.

The United Nations has warned that rising food prices threaten the poor worldwide, and the World Bank is warning that the crisis could lead to "seven lost years" in fighting global poverty.

Part Autobiography, Part Biblical Account -- A Christian Tale of Two Women

NEW YORK (Christian Newswire) - Jeannie Keneley lived through three destructive marriages and divorces. As a practicing Christian, she wondered how God could have let this happen. While having this many failed marriages is a controversial subject matter in the secular world, Keneley says it's downright "taboo" in the church.

Gleaning from the biblical story of the Woman at the Well, Jeannie paints a story of two women separated by two thousand years of history, but intrinsically woven together by their shared experience of abuse, betrayal, and abandonment and their journey of healing through God's amazing grace.

Dragons and Little Girls Don't Mix . . . Or Do They?

ENUMCLAW, Washington (Christian Newswire) - It all started on Halloween night, during a church fund raiser, when J. Michael Swinden entertained the children with a fantastic story while their parents bought pumpkins.

Swinden wove a tale of Sirgen, an enormous, ferocious dragon who destroyed villages, then napped atop the houses he'd just demolished. A nine-year-old orphan girl, undaunted by the dragon, demanded he move off the house so she could retrieve her doll from the wreckage.

Quick Gospel: Be a leader for Him

By Craig Sager
Good News Daily

Jeremiah 3:15: "I will give you leaders after my own heart, who will guide you with knowledge and understanding."

Thought: Most of us, most of the time, find ourselves being a follower and not a leader. It just seems easier to follow than to be the one making the decisions and leading. The problem is that most of us have gotten so complacent with being a follower, that we find ourselves short of leaders. Today I encourage all of you, including myself, to find a position of leadership and lead someone into the Kingdom of God and claim the power of leadership that God has given us.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, give us the courage, wisdom, and strength to accomplish our new role of leadership. Allow us to reach many and bring you all the honor and glory. Amen.

(Craig Sager writes devotionals to inspire people in their daily walk with God and open doors of understanding in how the Bible relates to each one of us. He lives with his wife and two sons in southwestern York County, Pa.)
